The basics
We are a family of NYC transplants living in Charlotte, NC and homeschooling our children, two elementary-aged kids and one wee toddler. We are pretty eclectic and relaxed in our homeschooling style. After a few years of exploring different homechooling philosophies and trying to DIY my own curriculum, we have settled on Sonlight as our curriculum. It is a literature-based curriculum that features high-quality children’s books. It is a Christian curriculum, but we use it secularly. It is very easy to secularize.
I practice attachment parenting, and am a strong proponent of breastfeeding, babywearing, cosleeping, and gentle discipline. Contrary to many popular stereotypes of homeschoolers, we’re not Christian, I don’t homeschool for religious reasons, I’m politically very liberal, I don’t think I’m better than parents who don’t homeschool, my kids do get to socialize, we do accept the theory of evolution, and we don’t live on a commune or in a yurt. Also, I don’t wear denim jumpers, Keds, or white socks.
